The name sequoia (or redwood) can be associated with several species of conifers of the Cupressaceae family, namely: Sequoia sempervirens, Sequoiadendron giganteum and Metasequoia glyptostroboides. These are resinous species that achieve impressive sizes in their natural habitat. All three species are of ornamental interest and are often planted in parks and green spaces. In addition to their large size, these trees are distinguished by their beautiful appearance, pyramidal crown and their straight trunk, wider at the base.

Species and varieties

Sequoia sempervirens

It is often referred to as California redwood or coast redwood and it is native to North America. In its homeland it grows to impressive heights of over 100 m and a diameter of over 9 m. The natural habitat of the species includes regions with altitudes up to 800-900 m, but there are also specimens at very low altitudes, even near the coast. The straight trunk is covered with thick, fibrous bark. In section, the bark is intensely red. The leaves are needle-shaped and flattened, light green with two whitish stripes on the underside. The cones are small (ca. 2 cm long), globular and have ca. 15-25 shield-shaped scales. Under each scale there are 3-7 winged seeds.

Sequoiadendron giganteum

This species is known as the mammoth tree or giant sequoia and it is native to North America. In its natural habitat (Sierra Nevada Mountains) it is found at altitudes above 1400 m. The largest mammoth trees are over 90 m tall and over 8 m in diameter. Specimens have been identified with estimated ages of over 3000 years.

The stem is strongly elongated, the bark is thick and deeply cracked, the crown is thick and regular, and the leaves are scale-shaped, acicular and arranged circularly on the shoots. Leaves fall at ca. 5 years old, together with the shoots. The winged seeds (each with two wings) are clustered in groups of 3-9 under each shield-shaped scale of the cone. The cones are ca. 4-8 cm long and mature in the year subsequent to their formation: they lignify, the scales split and the seeds fall to the ground.

Metasequoia glyptostroboides

It is a large resinous tree, up to 50 m tall in its native homeland (China). The natural habitat of the species includes regions with altitudes between 500 and 1400 m. The trees have thin bark, exfoliated in strips, and a sparse, light-coloured crown. The shoots are of two types: long and short. The long ones are persistent, while the short ones fall in autumn together with the flattened acicular leaves. The cones are small (about 2 cm long), globular, with rounded scales at the tip and a few twisted bracts. The seeds have two uneven wings.

Environmental conditions

Light. Secvoia sempervirescenta grows well in full light or partial shade. The mammoth tree grows well in partial shade, but it can also be planted in sunny areas. Metasequoia has high requirements in terms of light, it has a low tolerance for shade.

Temperature. All three species are suitable for moderate climate, and thus can be affected by extreme temperatures (both drought and frost). Sequoia sempervirens has high demands in terms of atmospheric humidity, therefore it grows well in regions near the open sea or in regions characterized by frequent heavy fog.

Soil. Redwood species grow well in deep, loose soils that are well supplied with nutrients. They tolerate soils with periodically high humidity (water from melting snow, floods and heavy rain).

Care

Watering. They require abundant watering during dry periods or in areas with a lack of humidity in the soil.

Fertilizing. To ensure an optimal growth and development, specific fertilizers that are specially formulated for the requirements of conifers can be applied during the growing season (spring-autumn).

Recommended products

Read carefully and follow the instructions on the label of each product

Pruning. In general, pruning is not necessary. However, if dry patches appear, they can be removed by pruning at any time of the year.

The Metasequoia species is also suitable for bonsai cultivation.

Planting. It is recommended to be done in autumn or spring. A successful planting can be encouraged by applying a specific fertilizer (the granular type) in the planting hole.

Propagation. Sequoia species can be propagated by seeds (from the winged seeds in the cones) or by vegetative propagation, from plant parts (by layering, from shoots or stumps). The germination capacity of the seeds is low, so seed propagation is slow and rare.

Diseases and pests. These species are rarely affected by diseases and pests. If symptoms of specific diseases or pests are observed, it is recommended to apply specific treatments with approved insecticides and fungicides.

Additionally:

  • The longevity is long:
    • over 3000 years for the mammoth tree
    • over 2000 years in the case of secvoia sempervirens
    • over 200 years for Metasequoia (possibly longer, but older specimens have not yet been studied);
  • In optimal conditions of vegetation, their growth is active;
  • Mammoth wood is prized for the reddish colour of its core (heartwood);
  • Redwood is soft, light and at the same time strong, durable.
