How to get rid of Stink Bugs
Published on: January 11, 2022 Modified on: 30 August 2023

The stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) is an insect that is part of the order Hemiptera, native to East Asia. It can often be found outside the house (on the walls, and windows), and they often also enter indoors. Therefore, in addition to the damage it causes to crops, it is also an annoying insect for humans. They are widespread in most regions of the globe. They are polyphagous species, attacking various crops such as fruit trees and shrubs, cereals, vegetables, and ornamental plants.
Stink bugs have a biological cycle that lasts 30-40 days. They can even produce 3-4 generations per year, depending on the climatic conditions. They are active from March / April, until September when they try to enter homes to hibernate. The insects overwinter in the adult stage, so it is recommended to prevent them from entering the house. In this way, you avoid the inconveniences that spring can cause when they wake up from hibernation and start laying eggs.
Stink bugs – Prevention methods
To make sure that the insects do not enter the house, especially in the fall, when looking for a suitable place to hibernate, certain measures must be taken.
First of all, it is important to seal all the cracks near the windows, doors, vents or sewers, which can be access points for stink bugs inside the house. Once indoors, they are harder to control, so it is better to follow the prevention methods. Silicone can be used to insulate the holes, and later, contact insecticides can be sprayed on the exterior walls to ensure greater protection.

However, it is important to note that chemical treatments do not have a long-lasting effect, and the stink bugs will continue to appear after a few days. Therefore, the sealing of access points and window screens is essential in controlling these pests.
If they are noticed indoors, a method of removing stink bugs is through aspiration. Using a powerful vacuum cleaner, insects and their eggs can be sucked out of their hiding places. It is recommended to use a vacuum cleaner with a disposable bag or one that can be easily emptied, in order to avoid crushing them and giving off their unpleasant, specific smell.
Additionally, in order to keep the stink bug population under control, it is important to remove weeds around the house (which may be host plants for insects) and to keep the yard clean of boxes and materials in which the stink bugs can take shelter.
