Preventing mosquitoes from breeding and spreading is essential for maintaining a healthy and safe environment. Mosquitoes are part of a group of about 3500 species and belong to the family Culicidae, order Diptera. About 100 different species of mosquitoes can be found in Europe.

In order to get rid of mosquitoes, it is advisable to apply pest control treatments indoors and outdoors. The treatments should be carried out for 5-6 months during the warm season.

Several types of traps and insecticides (larvicides, ready-to-use solutions (RTU), insecticide concentrates) can be used to control and repel mosquitoes. Their combined use is recommended for outdoor treatments.

Ready-to-use (RTU) contact insecticides against mosquitoes

Because they are ready-to-use products, they are a user-friendly option ideal for individuals. They require no special equipment and offer quick and easy application. Moreover, RTU (ready-to-use) insecticides can reduce the risk of contact with concentrated substances.

Insecticide concentrates to control mosquitoes for coarse application / with residual effect

Contact insecticide concentrates are dissolved in water (according to their instructions). The prepared solution is applied using specific equipment in areas where the insects are more active: on vegetation, in parks or in places with high humidity.

It is important to keep in mind that the effectiveness of the treatments is influenced by environmental factors such as precipitation, light intensity or dew. Thus, the effect of the treatment is longer if the space is dry and away from strong sunlight.

“Shock” treatments are recommended for mosquitoes. These lead to the elimination of as many mosquitoes as possible at the time of application and within the first 24-48 hours.

Equipment for applying insecticides against mosquitoes

The insecticide chosen is applied by spraying, using special pesticide application equipment. It is advisable to choose a suitable sprayer, taking into account the size of the treated area and the application method (manual/motorized). It is also important to take into account the regular adjustment and maintenance of the equipment. Moreover, the equipment should be selected depending on the control product you are using.

ULV (Ultra Low Volume) equipment for mosquito control

The devices atomize the solution into very fine particles. Cold fogging machines are used for the application of solutions with water as solvent, thermonebulizers or hot fogging machines and are used for the application of solutions with petroleum as solvent.

Atomizers for mosquito treatments

Atomizers run on gasoline and are used for the application of anti-mosquito treatments. They are mainly used directly on vegetation, to control pests outdoors.

Automatic nebulizers against mosquitoes

Automatic nebulizers can be used for prevention and monitoring after the application of essential spray treatments.

Depending on your need, you can set the frequency and duration of the cycle and the audible timer beeps 30 seconds before starting, giving you enough time to leave the area.

Larvicides against mosquitoes

There are various types of larvicides available, and the right choice depends on factors such as application medium, environmental conditions, rainfall, etc. Some larvicides work by disrupting larval development, while others work by intoxication or asphyxiation.

Growth regulators for mosquitoes

Substances known as growth regulators have a negative effect on insect growth, which will eventually lead to a reduction of the insect population.

Oils and films against mosquitoes

The larvicide forms a film that spreads over the entire water surface, causing all mosquito larvae and pupae to suffocate. This treatment is used to control mosquito larvae and pupae in standing water.

The thin film created prevents the development of the early stages of mosquitoes, as it blocks the access of larvae and pupae to the atmospheric oxygen necessary for their survival, thus leading to suffocation. In addition, the low surface tension prevents adult females from laying eggs, as they become trapped and sink in the water as soon as they come into contact with the treated surface.

Mosquito repellents

Using a pest repellent applied directly to the skin is essential to protect you from insects that can transmit diseases through stings. Eco-friendly repellents are formulated to keep pests away, providing long-lasting protection (6-10 hours). Made from natural ingredients, they are gentle to the skin, contain no harmful substances and have no negative effect on the environment.

Safety equipment

Safety equipment has the role of protecting the person who is performing the disinsection treatments. To avoid inhaling the vapors which are created during spraying or to avoid direct contact with the applied substances it is recommended to wear complete protective equipment. This includes: hooded protection suit, respiratory masks, chemical resistant gloves, rubber boots or waterproof footwear, as appropriate.

Recommended safety equipment:

Safety equipment has the role of protecting the person who is performing the disinsection treatments. This consists of protective gloves, coveralls, masks, etc. The equipment is chosen depending on the type of treatment, substances used or pest to be controlled.

  • Protection Gloves:
  • Gas masks, protection glasses:
Traps with UV light (with adhesive plate or with electric grid) against mosquitoes

To combat mosquitoes effectively and safely, UV light traps offer an ideal solution. They use mosquitoes’ natural attraction to ultraviolet (UV) light, which mimics moonlight and attracts mosquitoes.

UV light traps play an essential role in managing mosquito populations. They are suitable for both indoor use (with adhesive plate) and outdoor use (with electric grid). These devices are strategically placed near areas frequented by mosquitoes or close to their entry points. Traps with an adhesive plate attract insects with ultraviolet light and trap them on a special surface. They are ideal for indoors and in the food industry, where they provide silent and efficient capture.

It is crucial to change the adhesive plate when it is covered with insects or dust to maintain the effectiveness of the trap.

Adhesive traps for mosquitoes

These traps are non-chemical, making them safe for children and pets. They are designed to use mosquitoes’ reproductive habits against them. The most invasive mosquito species are known for their preference to breed in dark and damp places. The traps thus attract mosquitoes inside to lay their eggs and trap them on the containing adhesive strips.

In conclusion, considering the very high reproductive capacity of mosquitoes and the biological characteristics of these insects, treatments applied in certain areas at local or regional level are of crucial importance from the very beginning of their active season. The application of larvicides in places where egg-laying is observed is also necessary for the effective control of the mosquito population.
