Gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa) is a fruit-bearing shrub belonging to the Grossulariaceae family. It is a tall shrub that can reach up to 1.5 m tall. The leaves are lobed and sometimes, depending on the variety, may have small hairs. The flowers are small, greenish, and bloom in early spring. The fruit is spherical in shape and has a sweet-sour taste. They reach eating maturity between June and July.
The plant is mainly cultivated in hilly regions. It thrives well on light soils with an acid pH and is well supplied with mineral elements.
