Traps are used either to monitor or reduce insect or other pest populations.
They are usually based on food, visual, chemical, or pheromone attractants. Visual traps use lights, bright colors, or shapes to lure pests.
Pheromone traps attract only a specific species of pests.
The mechanism of the trap or the attractant used varies. For example, flies and wasps are attracted to proteins. Mosquitoes and many other insects are attracted by bright colors, carbon dioxide, lactic acid, floral or fruity scents, heat, moisture, and pheromones.
Depending on how they work, traps can be of several types:
Sticky: These have a solid support (usually made of cardboard, plastic, or wood) coated with adhesive. They often include an attractant or allow additional attractants to be added for higher capture efficiency.
Electronic: These operate in various ways. For example, some systems emit sounds when a mechanical trap is triggered. Others attract pests and eliminate them using electric current.
Mechanical: These are usually more cost-effective than sticky ones because they can be used over longer periods and allow for multiple captures. Sticky traps need to be replaced once the adhesive surface is full. Some mechanical traps are also self-locking: they do not harm the animal and allow it to be captured safely.
