Herbicides are chemical substances used to control unwanted plants in crops, orchards, vineyards, parks, railways, and other areas. According to their spectrum of action, herbicide can be selective – targeting specific plant species without negatively affecting the crops in which they are applied – or non-selective (total), which act on all plant species. Based on the time of application are classified as pre-emergent, applied before the emergence of weeds and crops, or post-emergent, applied after the weeds have emerged, either before or after the crop has sprouted. Depending on their mode of action, can be contact herbicide, which act externally by direct contact with the unwanted plant, or systemic herbicides, which are absorbed through the leaves or stem and transported throughout the plant via the sap. Proper herbicide application should be carried out under favorable weather conditions, using appropriate equipment and adequate protective gear.
