A detergent is a surfactant or a mixture of surfactants with cleaning properties in diluted solutions.
These substances are usually alkylbenzene sulfonates, a family of compounds similar to soap but more soluble in hard water because the polar sulfonate group (in detergents) is less likely than the polar carboxylate group (in soap) to bind with calcium and other ions found in hard water.
In most household contexts, the term detergent specifically refers to laundry detergent or dishwashing detergent, as opposed to hand soap or other types of cleaners. These detergents are commonly available in powder or concentrated liquid forms.
Like soaps, detergents work because they are amphiphilic — partially hydrophilic (polar) and partially hydrophobic (non-polar). This dual nature allows them to help mix hydrophobic substances (like oil and grease) with water. Since air is not hydrophilic, detergents are also foaming agents to varying degrees.
